The leader has to carry casting energy efficiently while remaining dependable around sand, shell, coral, mangroves, dock pilings, and a fish that can change direction without warning.

The butt section is the engine. A thicker, stiffer butt accepts energy from the fly line and starts the turnover. The taper manages how that energy moves toward the tippet. A leader that tapers too gently may be excellent for soft presentations with small flies, but it can struggle to straighten a bulky fly.
